Prinses Catharina-Amalia zal vandaag worden gedoopt met water uit de rivier de Jordaan. Het water is aangeboden door drie vrienden van prins Willem-Alexander die hij kent van zijn werk als internationaal waterbeheerder.
Water halen uit de Jordaan, waar al een groot tekort aan water is, om naar Nederland te brengen. Is dat geen bijzonder slecht staaltje "watermanagement"?

De training van het Nederlands elftal was vanmorgen niet voor pers en supporters toegankelijk. Het speelveld was echter goed zichtbaar vanaf de heuvels rond het stadion. Politieagenten probeerden vergeefs te voorkomen dat cameraploegen en fotografen vanaf grote afstand de training filmden. Ze stuurden de Nederlandse journalisten herhaaldelijk weg. Een fotocamera van een jong Nederlands meisje werd in beslag genomen.

The English Football Association last night rushed to defend the privacy of the England captain after long lens photographs of David Beckham on his hotel balcony were circulated to newspapers.
Lawyers acting for the FA contacted sports journalists in Lisbon, where the England squad are preparing for Euro 2004, and newspaper editors in London, warning them that use of the pictures would be considered an invasion of Beckham's privacy. The FA also complained to the Newspaper Publishers Association which circulated a note last night warning papers of the implications of using the paparazzi photos.
An FA source said that the pictures, apparently taken by a Portuguese freelance, not only breached the Press Complaints Commission code, but may also be in breach of Portuguese privacy law which is regarded as more stringent than that operating in the UK.
"David Beckham was in his hotel room and having shut the door behind him he has a reasonable expectation that his privacy should be respected," said the source. "In Portugal use of such pictures is a criminal act and we are confident that they will not be used locally. If they are used in the British press we will consider our options."

Time Inc. said on June 9, 2004 that it will bring back one of its most storied brands, Life, as a weekend magazine inserted into daily newspapers starting in October. The reincarnated Life will appear in newspapers on Fridays, rather than Sundays, avoiding direct competition with USA Weekend. A prototype of the magazine is shown.

De Utrechtse politie heeft dinsdag tijdens een wijkavond over veiligheid in Utrecht voor het eerst foto's van veelplegers aan het aanwezige publiek getoond. Dat heeft een woordvoerder van de politie woensdag bevestigd.
P. Vogelzang, de korpschef in Utrecht, kwam tijdens zijn nieuwjaarstoespraak in januari dit jaar met het idee om veelplegers uit de anonimiteit te halen door hun foto's openbaar te maken in wijken waar ze actief zijn. Hij noemde daarbij het internet als medium, maar ook plekken als buurthuizen.

Uit de talloze beschikbare foto's van de overleden Amerikaanse oud-president Ronald Reagan kozen zowel Time als Newsweek dezelfde plaat voor de voorpagina: een close up van een vriendelijk grijnzende Reagan onder de rand van zijn cowboyhoed. Het is eerder gebeurd; na de arrestatie van Saddam Hoessein plaatsten beide nieuwsweekbladen ook dezelfde foto.
In 1994 plaatsten Newsweek en Time dezelfde foto van O.J. Simpson op de voorkant van hun blad, waarbij opschudding ontstond omdat Time de foto (een mugshot van het Los Angeles Police Department) wat donkerder had gemaakt.

Vandaag in de New York Times een verslag van het ludieke protest tegen het verbod op metro-fotografie dat onlangs werd aangekondigd.
The photographers - about 100 of them - gathered to express their outrage at the Metropolitan Transportation Authority's proposed ban on taking pictures in the subway system. Meeting at Grand Central Terminal, they rode the trains for upward of an hour, shutters clicking, flashes popping, in a filmed rebuke to the idea that photography is somehow a national security threat.
"The point is really to make everyday people wake up and realize that photographers are not terrorists," said Joe Anastasio, who organized the event. "In the last few years, photographers near anything vaguely important have been getting harassed."
Mr. Anastasio went on to tell the story of a friend who took his wife's picture near the Whitestone Bridge, only to be called in for questioning by the police. He told another of a man caught snapping pictures at a Metro-North station who was interrogated for nearly two hours by authorities at the scene.
"The paranoia," he said, "has gone a little too far."

Het organisatiecomité van de aanstaande Olympische Spelen in Athene stelt wel extreem strenge eisen aan de bezoekers, ook waar het gaat om fotograferen en gefotografeerd worden.
Zo is verboden:
-Transmission of photographs through mobile phones.
-Flash photography. (Als het gaat om openluchtsporten een tamelijk bizarre regel)
En dan deze:
-If you are photographed, filmed or taped, you consent to ATHOC, the IOC or third parties appointed by them photographing, filming, or taping you. ATHOC, the IOC or third parties appointed by them can publish, license and use any photographs or images of you without compensation. The IOC, ATHOC, the third parties and anyone acquiring from them the right to use the material are not liable to you in any way for its use.
-Images of the Games taken by you with a camera cannot be used for any purpose other than for private and domestic purposes, (that is, you cannot sell, license, broadcast, publish, or otherwise commercially exploit them).

In de kersverse juni-editie van The Digital Journalist een artikel over Richard Avedon en een terugblik van voormalig Life-redacteur John Morris over het verloren gaan van Robert Capa's foto's (op elf na) van D-Day. (Gisteren vertelde Morris ook over deze kwestie op CNN.)
I ordered the Life darkroom to "rush, for Godssake." A few minutes later a lad from the darkroom rushed, almost hysterical, into my office, screaming "the films are ruined. Ruined!" He explained that he had hung them in the locker which served as a drying cabinet, normal practice, but because of the rush had closed the doors. There was too much heat; the emulsion melted. I ran back to the darkroom with him. I held up the films.. Nothing but gray soup on three of them. But on the fourth there were eleven discernible images.
